166 MINING COMPANIES THREATEN ENVIRONMENT
Viva News reported that, the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) of East Kalimantan reveals that 166 coal mining companies, which are currently applying forest use permit to run their business, are a threat to the forests’ sustainability.
“Unfortunately, some areas are protected forests,” the forum director, Isal Wardhana said in Samarinda as reported by tvone.co.id on Monday, March 1, 2010.
He also said that morally, the decision of Forestry Ministry to approve the request of the regional government and more than 60 mining companies in East Kalimantan to approve the forest use for non-forestry activities is unjustifiable.
According to the data obtained by Walhi, the provinces which mostly propose for forest use permit are South Kalimantan with 72 requests, East Kalimantan with 65 requests, Central Kalimantan with 20 requests and West Kalimantan with 8 requests.
Since 2001, deforestation in East Kalimantan has affected 350 thousand acres every year, which led to losses for the locals who still rely on forest products to earn a living.
Wardhana assumes that the government should not have granted the requests even though according to the rule, they should be approved after the issuance of Forest Ministerial Decrees.
“The requests should be deeply analyzed because the amount of deforestations in East Kalimantan is increasing. It has even affected protected forests as well,” he said.
Forest area exploitations in East Kalimantan would significantly affect the sustainability of forests in East Kalimantan and cause ecological disasters in the province. Based on Walhi’s observation, in the case occurred in Nunukan regency, the local government executed a road development project in a protected forest area.
“Until now, the local government has not been able to publicly show the Forest Ministerial Decree regarding the forest use, “ Wardhana said.
The project execution was a violation against the forestry law. “Authorities should have stopped it,” he said.
He went on by saying that the new Forestry Minister should not issue a decree on forestry use for Nunukan local government until the project is deeply examined. There has been an indication that the project was implemented without any decree.
“The particular activity will reduce the number of forest areas in East Kalimantan, especially because the reclamations, which have been done by several major coal companies in East Kalimantan, haven’t run maximally, “ he said.
Wardhana’s statement is supported by the finding of several lands that have not been maximally reclaimed by the team from the Provincial House of Representatives a while ago.
