China is still No.1
China was a largest importer of Indonesian coal in January 2010. China’s Indonesian coal imports increased by 872,000 MT in January 2010. China has imported 8.81 MLN tons coal in January 2010 compared to 8.72 MLN tons in December 2009. China's coal-hungry power plants have turned to Indonesia to import coal and the import trend will be expected to continue. Chinese power plants along the coast were forced to increase imported coal from Indonesia, Australia and even from South Africa as high winter demand and limited production due to harsh winter weather.
Indian lost its no.2 position
India become third largest importer of Indonesian coal in January 2010 first time since September 2009. South Korea replaced India and becoming second largest importer of Indonesian coal in January. India imported around 3.28 MLN tons of Indonesian coal where’s South Korea imported about 3.38 MLN ton.
Loading delays
Significant number of vessels were delayed in south and east Kalimantan anchorage points in January to load coal as small to medium-sized miners fail, to fulfill their commitments due to either over commitment or non availability of barge loading port to fill transshipment barges. The market players and independent surveyors were saying that, there were considerable delays in performing coal loading since December 2009.
"We still experience delays in coal loading to our nominated vessels, but we try to meet the shipment schedule with our buyers by ensuring entering coal purchase agreements with good performing coal suppliers" said a coal trader.
DMO Obligation
Recently Indonesian Government has issued Ministerial regulation which requires coal to set aside a certain amount of their production for domestic needs. The percentage of DMO obligation will be calculated based on total domestic consumption of coal, divided by the total production of coal. The obligation does not apply to domestic coal / mineral traders. However the domestic traders may require to hold valid mineral / coal trading licenses (i.e. the IUPOP for transportation and sales.
“Once DMO is implemented then, export of Indonesian coal might be reduced to fulfill domestic requirement, which may lead increase of Indonesian coal price.(cs)
