JORONG COULD COST BANPU 5%
Banpu Plc, Asean's biggest coal miner, forecasts a 5% drop in revenue if its suspended coal mine in Indonesia is closed for one year, says president Chanin Wongkusolkij.
"It is possible that revenue could drop, but the impact on net profits should be minimal," said Mr Chanin.
The Jorong mine in South Kalimantan on Borneo was suspended earlier this month by local police pending an investigation into land-use permits for a protected forest area.
The Forestry Ministry revoked the land-use permits for 23 mining and other operations in forested areas and said it may crack down further.Banpu last year generated revenue of 57 billion baht, 90% from mining in Indonesia and the rest from mines in China, electricity production and the power business in Thailand.
Annual coal production at Jorong contributes 1.9 million tonnes or 8% of the company's projected production of 23 million tonnes this year.
The company is in talks with Indonesian government officials over reopening the mine. Jorong still has five to seven years of operation left, said Mr Chanin.
Banpu has six coal concessions in South Kalimantan, including Jorong.
Banpu projects coal prices will be stable after the second half of the year. Prices are now US$88-89 per tonne and the average coal price in 2009 was $72.
Demand is expected to be stronger, especially in China and India, but prices might be lower than last year because of lower coal quality, Mr Chanin said.
Banpu since Jan 1 has sold about 50% of its total production of 23 million tonnes at an average price of $60.
BANPU shares closed yesterday on the SET at 526 baht, up 4 baht, in trade worth 270.5 million baht.
