THE FREIGHT MARKET CONTINUED TO BE WEAK THIS WEEK - CAPT. REDDY


COALspot.com (Singapore): The freight market continued to be weak this week. There have been quite a few spot vessels open Far east and have been forced to fix at low numbers. The trend may continue at least until next week till the Chinese New year holidays are over.

BDI INDEX
The BDI dropped by 144 points by 5 pct and closed at 2,571 points. The cape index dropped by 215 points by 6 pct and closed at 3,259 points. The Panamax dropped only by about 4 pct this week compared to 8 pct last week and was down by 113 points and closed at 3,141 points. The Supramax index dropped by 108 points by 5 pct and closed at 2,048 points.

The handy size index dropped by 18 points by about 2 pct and closed at 1,038 points.

CHARTER HIRE
The average charter hire was at Cape US$ 29,649 per day, Panamax US$ 21.,412 per day, Supramax US$ 21,112 per day and Handy size US$ 15,169 per day.

“Short period rates for Supramax was around US$ 21,000 – 22,000 per day for vessels opening Far East / SE Asia” - Vistaar Shipping

The Supramax index in the Far East (S6 route) continued to softened and was down by US$ 1,572 per day and closed at US$ 14,998 per day. Next week also would continue to be soft because of Chinese new year holidays . The ECI/China (S7) route was almost at same levels with a drop of only US$ 528 per day and closed slightly lower at US$ 25,335 per day mainly.

Short period rates for Supramax was around US$ 21/22000 per day for vessels opening Far East/SE Asia. Supramax charter rates for one year is around US$ 19000 per day.

THREE YEARS FUTURE
The futures for three years (2010-2012) remained unchanged and was at around Cape US$  28,000 per day, Panamax US$ 18,500 per day, Supramax US$  15,500 per day, Handy size US$  12,500 per day.

PORT CONGESTION
The congestion at Australian ports in the EC for coal loading continued to be high at 148 vessels (last week 148 vessels), which is highest in 3 yrs. The congestion increased due to bad weather. The number of vessels waiting at DBCT and Newcastle was around 60 vessels. The  waiting at DBCT was around 30 days , Hay point and Gladstone 10-12 days and Newcastle about 16 days. On the WC Australia  iron ore vessels waiting was same as last week at 22 vessels (last week 25 vessels). The waiting at Indian ports for coal vessels was quite normal around 3/4 days.

CRUDE
The crude prices firmed up this week and the Brent crude prices was at US$ 72.90 per barrel (last week US$ 70.23 per barrel). The  prices of bunkers also was up at US$456 pmts (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore) on 12th Feb 2010.
