United States of America imported significant quantity of Indonesian coal (1.768 million tons or 0.79 percent of total export) in 2009. Major supplier of Indoensian coal to USA in 2009 was PT. Adaro Indonesia. Adaro supplied about 67percent of total American imports of Indoensian coal in 2009.
According to Bambang Setiawan, Director-General for Coal, Minerals and Geothermal, Indonesia’s coal production may rise to 309 million tons by 2014, Bloomberg reported
South Africa exported 29 percent of its total export to India and 2 percent to China in 2009. South Africa shipped 61.14 million metric tons of coal through RCBT last year.
Reuters report says, Russian exporters hope to benefit from continued strong Asian demand and that it will keep their FOB prices comfortably above the USD 75 per ton FOB cash cost level.
Energy thirsty Asian market is becoming to dominate coal producing countries by importing more coal to support their economic growth. The price factor is no more a issue for Indian and Chinese buyers as the demand for coal is increasing continually. Many Indian coal buyers are signing coal purchase contracts based on Coal Indexes released by Globalcoal, Platts, Argus and ICI Coal Indo, etc…
To secure long term coal supplies, many Indian companies have already invested in Indonesia & Mozambique coal mines.
Recently Indonesian Government has issued Ministerial regulation which requires metal and coal miners to set aside a certain amount of their production for domestic needs. The percentage of DMO obligation will be calculated based on total domestic consumption of coal or minerals, divided by the total production of coal or minerals.
Once DMO is implemented then, export of Indoensian coal will be reduce to fulfill domestic requirement, which may lead increase of Indoensian coal price as Asian coal demand is expecting to increase coming years.(cs)
