DRY BULK CHARTERING - SHIPPING UPDATE
 Handy
Continued firm conditions for the Handymax / Supramax market in the Atlantic despite the BSI´s downward trend. As chrs scramble to cover their stems prior the holidays, rates remained nevertheless firm (USD 50,000 still achieved by Supras dely USG to FEast) and high 20´s for transatlantic trips.
Owners are still reluctant to go Far East thus chrs have to pay hefty premiums. The Far East market continued its downward trend during the last week, for Pacific rounds charterers aiming for Supras mid teens where ows try to achieve high teens.
For Indonesia / India coal trips from Far East Supras were fixed in the high teens. For Backhaul trips Supras were trading in the low teens. The period market remains quiet, only a few fixtures reported, for short period ows asking low 20´s. India; there is still a lack of tonnage in WCI and the rates are still firm, for India / China iron ore trips vessels were fixed at very high 20´s / low 30´s.
Panamax
The Atlantic market, after a slight downturn, has been quite steady and firm with less tonnage available.
The Pacific market rates decreased heavily at the end of last, but seems now to have bottomed out and have been slowly increasing the few days, with an ´overflow´ of Indonesia shipments.
The amount of activity fading out as we are approaching the Christmas holiday and it hasn´t been many signs of a ´Christmas rush´ neither from the chrts nor the owners´ side. The period market has been slow during the last week, with few fixtures reported. A 2-year deal were concluded at US$ 19500 / day with delivery in the Pacific mid January.
Capesize
The market has over the past week been very much in a holiday mood, withdecreasing rates every day. While some owners respond by approaching the charters directly and accepting considerable less than last done, others just pull back and go for Christmas holiday.
The rate for West coast Australia to China is presently arnd US$ 11.00 pmt. Rio Tinto, BHP and FMG have been more or less absent.
Also for the Brazil to China trade there appears to be lack of cargoes and last done is in the mid twenties. There are however expectations for a stronger January! In the mean time, everyone is looking forward to enjoy the Christmas.
