THE ECI / CHINA (S7) ROUTE SOFTENED AND WAS AT US$ 25,275 PER DAY - VISTAAR
COALspot.com (Singapore): "The market was bit soft in the beginning of the week, however towards mid week that market started to pick up and the market started to firm up" says, Capt. Reddy, MD, Vistaar Shipping, Singapore.
BDI INDEX
The BDI index was up by 133 points this week and closed at 4,107 points which was an increase of about 3.5 pct. The Cape Index (BCI) was also firm and was up by 302 points and closed at 6,655 points which is almost 5 pct increase. The Panamax index was almost at same levels with a increase of 60 points only and closed at 3,928 points. The Supramax index dropped by about 3 pct by 64 points and closed at 2,382 points. The handy size index remained firm which was up by 45 points and closed at 1,182 points.
The average charter hire was at Cape US$ 71,163 per day , Panamax US$ 31,580 per day, Supramax US$ 24,904 per day and Handysize US$ 17,134 per day.
The supramax index in the Far East (S6 route) was slightly soft at US$ 24,185 per day. The ECI/China (S7) route softened and was at US$ 25,275 per day down by almost 9 pct compared to last week.
Short period rates for Supramax was at US$ 22,000 per day for vessels opening Far East / SE Asia. Supramax charter rates for one year is around US$ 18,000 / 19,000 per day.
THREE YEARS FUTURE
According to Vistaar Shipping, the futures for three years (2010-2012) firmed up compared to last week and was at around Cape US$ 30,000 per day, Panamax US$ 18,000 per day, Supramax US$ 15,500 per day, Handysize US$ 11,500 per day.
The iron ore and coal movement seemed to remain quite strong. The steel production also was high and according to data from the World Steel Association, October world crude steel production hit a 14-month high of 112.2 Mt, posting a 13% increase year-on-year. This is the second month in a row when global steel output represented a year-on-year increase. The majority of this increase was due to China and the CIS, which registered growth of 42.4% and 26.9% year-on-year with monthly production at 51.7 Mt and 9.0 Mt respectively. Annual declines were pronounced in the US (-12.4% to 5.9 Mt), Japan (-12.9% to 8.8 Mt) and the EU (-12.1% to 14.1 Mt).
PORT CONGESTION
The congestion in Australia increased to 124 vessels in EC Australia with maximum waiting at DBCT 30/40 days , whereas Haypoint was around 10/12 days and Newcastle was around 14/16 days. The vessels waiting at WC Australia for iron ore was at 11 vessels.
The approximate waiting at Indian ports was around 3/10 days with maximum waiting at Paradip.
CRUDE PRICE
The brent crude prices remained at around same levels at US$ 77.65 per barrel . The bunker prices during the week remained same as last week and the prices for IFO 380 cst at US$ 472 pmt ex Singapore.
