NTPC SEEKS ALTERNATE COAL SUPPLY FOR KAHALGAON
 State-run NTPC is looking at alternate sources of coal to fire its Kahalgaon (Bihar) and Farakka (West Bengal) and power stations, which are facing problem in coal supply.
“We are looking at other opportunities as well for (sourcing coal) Kahalgaon and Farakka,” CMD NTPC R S Sharma told reporters here.
“I am aware that Farakka and Kahalgaon have got coal problems, they have become a matter of concern because of 1,500 MW capacity addition at the plants,” he said adding that the coal requirement would be met partly through the Raniganj coal fields and partly through the Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd of Coal India Ltd.
Power Secretary H S Brahma earlier this week had said the Kahalgaon and Farakka thermal power plants of NTPC were not working for 45 days due to Railways bottlenecks.
Rajmahal coal mines in the Naxal hit Jharkhand meets the dry fuel requirement of NTPC’s 2,350-MW Kahalgaon and 1,600-MW Farakka plants, which require eight and 15 rakes of coal per day respectively. One rake is equal to 3,600 metric tonnes.
NTPC is importing nearly 15 million tonnes of coal out of its total requirement of 150 million tonnes this fiscal to bridge the shortfall.
The company is also exploring the possibility of acquiring stakes in coal mines in Mozambique, South Africa among others.
