INDONESIA'S BAYAN SEES 2010 COAL OUTPUT UP 42 PCT
 Reuters reported that, Indonesian coal miner PT Bayan Resources Tbk (BYAN.JK) said on Tuesday it expects its coal output to increase by 42 percent in 2010 through the expansion of existing mines.
Bayan, Indonesia's eighth-largest coal producer by volume, plans to produce 13.5 million tonnes of coal next year, up from a target of 9.5 million tonnes of coal this year, Alastair Mcleod, Bayan's chief financial officer, said.
"We started two new mines last year and two mines this year. All of those mines continue to expand," Mcleod told reporters on the sidelines of Coaltrans 3rd Coal Mining Operations & Economics in Jakarta.
The firm has eight mining companies with a total concession area of 81,265 hectares (200,800 acres).
Bayan produced 5.5 million tonnes of coal in the first half of this year, Mcleod said, and production for this year could top its target of 9.5 million tonnes.
The firm plans to boost its coal output to 20 million tonnes within the next five years, Mcleod said.
Bayan is also actively seeking buyers for its updgraded clean coal briquettes from its new plant.
"Our marketing strategy is to sell small lots to a wide variety of customers. We are looking at 20-25 customers. So when we expand to 5 million tonnes, we already have (a) customer base," he said.
Bayan has established a joint venture firm -- PT Kaltim Supacoal -- with a unit of Australia's White Energy Ltd to turn high moisture coal produced at Bayan's Tabang mine in East Kalimantan into a higher energy clean burning products using White Energy's technology for use in coal-fired power plants.
It has completed construction of its first coal upgrading plant and produced its first batch of upgraded clean coal briquettes in August at the plant, which has a capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum.
The firm plans to build another four plants between the first half of 2010 and the first half of 2012, which will boost the capacity to 5 million tonnes, Mcleod said.
In September, Bayan said it had appointed Standard Chartered Bank as a financial adviser for raising at least $150 million for the briquetted coal project.
