SHIPPING MARKET INSIGHT - INTERMODAL
As another year is coming to an end, it is interesting to look at the main shipping markets and how these performed compared to 2017.
SnP market
The sustained recovery in dry bulk freight earnings resulted in healthy appetite for purchases in the SnP market, with a slowdown witnessed during the last quarter of the year on the back of the volatile freight market. On the tanker side things remained comparatively quieter, with extended pressure on earnings during the greater part of the year discouraging SnP deals, while the very recent positive reversal in the sector seems to have brought back from the sidelines more than a few Buyers. Greek owners in particular have bought in the past six weeks 24 tanker vessels, which represents 28% of all the tanker vessels they have bought in 2018 so far.
Newbuilding market
The revival in newbuilding activity in 2017 extended during 2018 as well, with impressive ordering volumes “ignoring” most of the times performance in the respective freight markets. The upcoming regulations of 2020 have offered a lot of support in contracting volumes especially in the case of the tanker sector, where bigger vessels have seen steady ordering despite the fact that respective rates reached bottom levels in many cases this year. Owners who could get access to finance did not hesitate to place an order and were not even discouraged by the fact that newbuilding prices have been moving up since the beginning of the year. The layer of confidence added by the recent positive reversal in the tanker sector has already given another boost to newbuilding appetite.
Demolition market
Activity in the demolition market has been much softer this year, with the year to date decrease calculated at around 30%. The further slowdown of dry bulk and container scrapping in 2018 has been the main reason behind this drop. Overall healthy freight performance in both sectors have brought a 71% drop in bulker and 58% drop in container demolition activity respectively, while on the other hand the up until recently struggling tanker freight market has seen an impressive increase of scrapping, calculated at 142%.
