XSTRATA TO BUILD ITS OWN RAIL CAPACITY TO SHIP AUSTRALIAN COAL
 Bloomberg reported that, Xstrata Plc, the world’s largest exporter of coal used by power stations, will establish its own rail haulage capacity in Australia within two years to boost its ability to ship the energy fuel.
Investment in the Hunter Valley infrastructure will support port and rail expansions in New South Wales state designed to increase output, spokeswoman Claire Divver said today by e-mail. The trains will ship alongside Xstrata’s existing contracts with haulage company Pacific National, Divver said.
“We entered into a commitment to procure rolling stock and commence haulage operations from 2011,” she said. “This will provide greater security of supply to coal-chain capacity.”
The Zug, Switzerland-based company, along with rivals BHP Billiton Ltd. and Rio Tinto Group, is seeking to increase output in the Hunter Valley through Newcastle Port to meet rising demand in Asia. BHP last week agreed a plan with New South Wales to increase cargo-handling efficiency at Newcastle, the world’s biggest export harbor for power station coal.
Coal exports from Newcastle may double from the output of 91 million metric tons a year now, Port Waratah Coal Services Ltd., operator of the site’s two terminals, said on Sept. 18. Xstrata has 13 mines in New South Wales, its Web site shows. Pacific National is owned by port and rail operator Asciano Ltd.
