THE CAPE INDEX WAS DOWN BY 16.32% WEEK OVER WEEK
 COALspot.com: The Freight market was steady week over a week except for Cape. The cape index was down 16.32 percent week over week.
The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities decline this past week and ending on a negative note week over week. The BDI was down by 5.70% from the last week and Cape Index was also down 16.32% or decreased 424 points week over week.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was reported declined 5.7% week over week and ended at 1223 points on 7 April 2017. The index peaked at 11,793 points in May 2008.
The Cape Index was down by 16.32% week over week. The BCI closed 2173 points on 7 April 2017. While the Panamax index (BPI) was increased (3.85%) week over week.
The Supramax index (BSI) was rose slightly 0.57% to 886 points on 7 April 2017, compared to 881 points on 31 March 2017. The handy size index was rose 1.29% and the index was closed at 547 points for the same period.
According to Vistaar India, this past week’s daily average earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India passing through Singapore was stay steady week over week, owners were rating at around US$ 11,500 - 12,000 per day, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 12000 per day delivery Shanghai area.
According to a port agent in Indonesia, as of 8 April, around 104 vessels nominated to Indonesian coal exporters to load around 6.85 million tons of coal for the various destinations. According to to report, a number of vessels were waiting for loading since 17 March 2017 particularly in Samarinda anchorage.
Vistaar Further noted that the futures for three years (2017-2020) for the ships were reported lower than the current spot rates that ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 16000 per day, the Panamax at US$ 12,000 per day, Supramax at US$ 9000 per day and Handy-size at US$ 8000 per day, no change from last week’s three years future rates.
The freight rates are expected to be steady to firm this week says Vistaar India.
The Brent crude oil price was closed at $ 55.24 per barrel up from the same period last week. The bunker prices were closed at $321 pmt (IFO 380 CST ex. Singapore on 7 April 2017).
Ex. Singapore bunker prices (IFO 380) rose 6.64% and 79.32% week over week and year on year respectively and declined 7.22% year to date.
