DRY BULK RATES CONTINUING TO FIRMING UP
 COALspot.com: The Freight market was continuing to firming up. Baltic Panamax Index rose 12.81 percent week over week.
The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rose this past week and ending on a positive note week over week. The BDI was up by 4.60% from the last week and Cape Index was also up 4.63% or increased 115 points week over week.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was reported up 4.60% week over week and ended at 1297 points on 31 March 2017. The index peaked at 11,793 points in May 2008.
The Cape Index was up by 4.63% week over week. The BCI closed 2597 points on 31 March 2017. The Panamax index (BPI) was also increased (12.81%) week over week.
The Supramax index (BSI) was down 1.67% to 881 points on 31 March 2017, compared to 896 points on 24 March 2017. The handy size index was rose 2.66% and the index was closed at 540 points for the same period.
According to Vistaar India, this past week’s daily average earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India passing through Singapore was stay firm week over week, owners were rating at around US$ 12,000 per day, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 12000 per day delivery Shanghai area.
Vista Further noted that, the futures for three years (2017-2020) for the ships were reported lower than the current spot rates that ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 16000 per day, the Panamax at US$ 12,000 per day, Supramax at US$ 9000 per day and Handy-size at US$ 8000 per day.
The freight rates are expected to be steady to firm this week says Vistaar India.
According to Reuters, the charter rates of Western Australia-to-China route rose to $6.79 per tonne on Thursday from $6.55 per tonne a week earlier. Rates hit $7.16 per tonne on March 28, the highest since Nov. 17. Freight rates for the route from Brazil to China climbed to $16.43 per tonne on Thursday against $15.85 per tonne a week earlier. Rates surged to $16.77 per tonne on March 28, the highest since Dec. 2, 2014.
The Brent crude oil price was closed at $ 52.83 per barrel slightly up from last week. The bunker prices were closed at $ 301 pmt (IFO 380 CST ex. Singapore on 31 March 2017).
Ex. Singapore bunker prices (IFO 380) rose 3.61% and 66.75% week over week and year on year respectively and declined 13% year to date.
