PORT OF NEWCASTLE SHIPPED 17.39% LESS COAL IN JANUARY; TRADE VALUE UP 11.87% M/M
Port of newcastleCOALspot.com: The Port of Newcastle, Australia’s major trading ports and the world’s largest coal export port has shipped $AU 1,625.6 Million worth of 13.169 million tons of Power plant coal and coking coal for the month ended January 2017. The average selling price for month January 2017 was around $AU 123.43 (approximately US$ 94.74*) per ton, rose approximately 35.42 percent from December 2016 average selling price of $AU 91.14 per ton.

Port has shipped 17.39 percent less coal in January 2017 compared to its December 2016 loading of 15.943 million tons.

$AU 1,625.6 million trade value of coal shipped in January 2017 compared to $AU 1,453.1 million in December 2016.

According to operation report posted on port’s website, as of 31 January 2017, the port has served 148 (down 19.12% month on month) ocean-going vessels in January 2017.

The port’s report further noted that the Port of Newcastle has shipped coal to Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Caledonia & Taiwan in the month of January 2017.

Anglo, Peabody, Rio Tinto and Xstrata are some of the larger coal exporters to ship coal from Newcastle port.

The Port of Newcastle is the largest bulk shipping port on the east coast of Australia and the world’s leading coal export port. On 30 May 2014, Port of Newcastle Investments (trading as Port of Newcastle) commenced a 98-year lease of the Port of Newcastle with the New South Wales Government.

According to company’s website, the principal trade at the Port of Newcastle is coal. Non-coal commodities traded through the port include grain, steel, project cargo, vegetable oils, fuels, orange juice concentrate and containers destined for local business.
