THE FREIGHT MARKET WAS FIRMED UP THIS PAST WEEK; BCI ROSE 57.64% W/W
COALspot.com: The Freight market was firmed up this past week.
The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rose this past week and ending on a positive note except panamax week over week. The BDI was up by 18.08% from the last week and Cape Index was also up 57.64 % or increased around 426 points week over week.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was reported up 18.08% week over week and ended at 875 points on 24 February 2017. The index peaked at 11,793 points in May 2008.
The Cape Index was up by 57.64% week over week. The BCI closed 1176 points on 24 February 2017. The Panamax index (BPI) was also increased (6.21%) week over week on 24 February 2017.
The Supramax index (BSI) was up 3.27% to 809 points on 24 February 2017, compared to 729 points on 17 February 2017.
The handy size index was rose 9.46% and the index was closed at 428points for the same period.
According to Vistaar India, this past week’s daily average earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India passing through Singapore was firm week over week, owners were rating at around US$ 11000-11500 per day, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 7500 per day delivery Shanghai area, rose compared to last week rates.
Road blockages and bad weather in coal-rich Kalimantan are being blamed for a disruption of coal supplies. Significant numbers of ships were waiting for load coal from Kalimantan. Daily charter rates were moving to North, due to less availability of vessels this region.
The futures for three years (2017-2020) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 12000 per day, the Panamax at US$ 8,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 8000 per day and Handysize at US$ 7000 per day. No change from last week reported three years future rates.
Freight rates are expected to be steady to firm next week.
