U.S. WEEKLY COAL OUTPUT ESTIMATED 15.7 MMST; UP 14.1% W/W
.jpg) COALspot.com – U.S., the world’s second largest coal producers have produced approximately totalled an estimated 15.7 million short tons (mmst) of coal in a week (For the week ended January 14, 2017), EIA said in its latest report.
According to EIA’s latest report, this production estimate is 14.1% higher than last week's estimate and 13.4% higher than the production estimate in the comparable week in 2016.
East of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 6.3 mmst (up 14.54% week over week) and west of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 9.4 mmst (up 13.25% week over week), according to weekly figures released by the US Energy Information Agency (EIA), on January 19, 2017.
U.S. year-to-date (as of January 14, 2017) coal production totaled an estimated 29.5 mmst, 9.2% higher than the comparable year-to-date coal production in 2016.
Coal Exports
According to EIA's Quarterly Coal Report, the third quarter 2016 U.S. coal exports (12.6 million short tons) decreased 11.7% from second quarter 2016 and decreased 25.8% from third quarter 2015. The average price of U.S. coal exports during the third quarter 2016 was $67.24 per short ton.
Coal Imports
EIA further says in its Quarterly Coal Report, the United States continued to import coal primarily from Colombia (79.7%), Canada (11.8%), and Indonesia (6.2%).
No imports were recorded from Australia for third quarter 2016.
U.S. coal imports in third quarter 2016 totaled 2.7 million short tons. The average price of U.S. coal imports during the third quarter 2016 was $62.70 per short ton.
November Coal Output
According to EIA, U.S. coal output in November 2016 was 70.7 million short tons (MMst), the third time this year monthly production exceeded 70 MMst. EIA further noted that, forecast annual coal production declines by 15% to 758 MMst in 2016, which would be the lowest level of coal production since 1978. Coal production is forecast to increase by 2% in 2017.
