U.S. WEEKLY ESTIMATED COAL PRODUCTION TOTALED APPROXIMATELY 12.4 MMST; DOWN 18.4% W/W - EIA
 COALspot.com – U.S., the world’s second largest coal producers have produced approximately totalled an estimated 12.4 million short tons (mmst) of coal in a week (For the week ended December 31, 2016), EIA said in its latest report.
According to EIA’s latest report, this production estimate is 18.4% lower than last week's estimate and 4.1% higher than the production estimate in the comparable week in 2015.
East of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 4.7 mmst (down 18.96% week over week) and west of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 7.7 mmst (down 18.08% week over week), according to weekly figures released by the US Energy Information Agency (EIA), on January 5, 2017.
U.S. year-to-date (as of December 31, 2016) coal production totaled an estimated 738.7 mmst, 17.6% lower than the comparable year-to-date coal production in 2015.
November Coal Output
According to EIA, U.S. coal output in November 2016 was 70.7 million short tons (MMst), the third time this year monthly production exceeded 70 MMst. EIA further noted that, forecast annual coal production declines by 15% to 758 MMst in 2016, which would be the lowest level of coal production since 1978. Coal production is forecast to increase by 2% in 2017.
Coal Exports
According to EIA's Quarterly Coal Report, the first quarter 2016 U.S. coal exports (14.2 million short tons) decreased 7.5% from fourth quarter 2015 and decreased 35.6% from first quarter 2015. However, the EIA’s Short-term energy outlook noted that Coal exports in July 2016 totaled 3.3 million short tons (MMst), which was 40% lower than in June and the lowest amount of coal exported in any month since February 2007.
Exports for the first seven months of 2016 were 32% lower than in the same period in 2015. EIA forecasts U.S. coal exports will decline by 26% in 2016 to 55 MMst, the lowest level since 2006. Exports are expected to decline by an additional 5% in 2017.
Coal Imports
EIA further says in its Quarterly Coal Report, continued to import coal primarily from Colombia (81.2%), Canada (8.9%), and Indonesia (7.4%). U.S. coal imports in first quarter 2016 totaled 2.7 million short tons. The average price of U.S. coal imports during the first quarter 2016 was $63.97 per short ton.
