DO THE DERIVATIVES MARKETS MAKE COAL PRICES MORE VOLATILE? 59.21% SAY YES, POLL
COALspot.com: The substantial increase or decrease in coal prices within a short period of time has been supported by a number of fundamental drivers.
In addition to fundamental supply and demand factors, the activity of speculators in financial markets also playing a significant role in contributing to the increase or decrease in the level and volatility of coal prices in recent months.
Do the derivatives markets make coal prices more volatile?
COALspot.com on-line response survey was conducted during 1st week of December 2016 and according to the survey, 59.21% of around 152 respondents believed that derivatives markets can affect the short-run price dynamics for coal.

The on-line opinion poll conducted by COALspot.com over 5 to 11 December 2016 involved around 152 coal market participants, with respondents, including (likely) producers, end-users, traders and others.
When those surveyed were asked, "do the derivatives markets make coal prices more volatile", 59.21 percent of participants choose derivatives markets could affect the short-run price dynamics for coal, versus 11.18 percent who choose "No" and saying derivatives markets cannot influence the short-run price dynamics for coal.
Among the 59.21% respondents who choose derivatives markets could affect the short-run price dynamics for coal a 36.18 percent of respondents picked the answer “Yes, drastically affecting” while another 23.03 percent says "Yes, but slightly affecting".
A 29.61% respondent says "May be" and 11.18% say "NO".
Coal Miners
Some 58.97 percents of around 39 likely coal miners say “Yes" and another 30.77 percent of coal miners say "May be" derivatives markets is influencing coal price movements.

Some 10.26 percent of likely coal miners picked the answer “NO“. Around 39 likely coal miners participated in this on-line opinion poll.
Coal end-users
Among the likely coal end users, some 68.18 per cent respondents' joint hand with "Yes" group and only 9.09 percent likely end-users say "NO". 22.73% of participants representing likely coal end-users say "May be". Around 22 likely coal end-users participated in this on-line opinion poll.
Coal Traders
Among the likely coal traders, some 57.15 percent, says "Yes" derivatives markets are influencing coal price movements, while another 33.93 percent of likely coal traders say "May be". 8.93% of another set of coal traders believed that derivatives markets cannot decide the direction of coal prices.
Around 56 likely coal traders participated in this on-line opinion poll last week.
The COALspot opinion poll was conducted online between, 5 Dec 00:01 GMT to 11 Dec 2016 23:59 GMT. The latest poll responded by total 152 visitors, 39 who identified themselves as coal miners, 22 respondents identified themselves as end-users and 56 participants who identified themselves as coal traders.
Around 35 participants identified themselves as “Others”. Some 31.43 percents of around 35 others say “Yes, slightly" and another 25.71 percent say " Yes, drastically". A 25.71 percent of others say "May be" and 17.14 percent of others says No, derivatives markets cannot decide the direction of coal prices.
