THE FREIGHT MARKET WAS CONTINUING TO SOFTEN
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities continually decline this past week and ending on a negative note week over week. The BDI was down by 13.21% from the previous week and Cape Index was down 33.46% or around 527 points week over week.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was reported down 144 points, week over week and ended at 946 points on 16 December 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index was down 33.46% week over week. The BCI closed 1048 points on 16 December 2016. The Panamax index (BPI) was also declined week over week on 16 December 2016. The Panamax index was fell 25.33% from end of last week’s closing.
The Supramax index (BSI) was fell 0.62% to 960 points on 16 December 2016, compared to 966 points on 9 December 2016. The handy size index was increased 5.82 to 600 points for the same period.
According to Vistaar India, this past week’s daily average earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India passing through Singapore was steady, owners were rating at around US$ 8500 - 9000 per day, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 8500 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be soft this week.
The Vistaar India further noted that the average spot Cape’s charter rates were reported at around US$ 6,729 per day and Panamax was reported at around US$ 8,994 per day. The spot Supramax’s average charters rate was reported at around $ 10,034 per day, while the Handy-size ships were at $ 8,537 per day. The average spot charter rates for all size ships declined week on week except for Handy size ships, which rose compared to last week.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 11,000 per day, the Panamax at US$ 8,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,500 per day and Handysize at US$ 7000 per day. No change from last week’s closing.
The Supramax S8 route charter rates fell 3.45% week over week to $6,119 per day on Friday 16 December 2016 ($6,338 was reported on 9 December 2016).
According to Vistaar the freight rate from Indonesia to India is expected to be soft, this week.
The Brent crude oil price was closed at US$ 55.21 per barrel, up week over week. The bunker prices were closed at US$ 327.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex. Singapore on 16 December 2016) significant increase week over week.
