BALTIC PANAMAX INDEX UP 5.98%; BALTIC CAPE INDEX FELL 2.52% W/W
COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rally slightly continues this past week and ending on a slightly positive note. The BDI was up by just 1.27% from the previous week and Cape Index was down 2.52% or around 57 points week over week.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was reported up 1.27% week over week and ended at 1196 points on 2 December 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index was down 2.52% week over week. The BCI closed 2206 points on 2 December 2016. The Panamax index (BPI) was increased (5.98%) to 1486 points on 2 December 2016. The Supramax index (BSI) was rose 1% to 917 points on 2 December 2016, compared to 908 points on 25 November 2016.
The handy size index was also increased 4.04% and the index was closed at 541 points for the same period.
According to Vistaar India, this past week’s daily average earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India passing through Singapore was slightly softened, owners were rating at around US$ 8000 per day, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 9000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be stead this week.
The Vistaar India further noted that the average spot Cape’s charter rates were reported at around US$ 14259 per day and Panamax was reported at around US$ 11853 per day. The spot Supramax’s average charters rate was reported at around $ 9590 per day, while the Handy-size ships were at $ 7656 per day. The average spot charter rates for all size ships rose week over week except Cape.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 11000 per day, the Panamax at US$ 8,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,500 per day and Handysize at US$ 7000 per day.
The Supramax S8 route charter rates rose 6.61% week over week to $6447 per day on Friday 2 December 2016 ($6566 was reported on 25 November 2016).
According to Vistaar the freight rate from Indonesia to India is expected to be firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was closed at US$ 54.46 per barrel rose 15.28% week over week. The bunker prices were closed at US$ 308.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex. Singapore on 2 December 2016).
