ITALY'S STEAM COAL IMPORTS EXPECTED TO DECLINE 7% Y/Y TO 15 MILLION TONS IN 2017 - ITALIAN COAL ASSOCIATION
 Italy’s steam coal imports expected to decline to 15 million tons in 2017, or 7% less imports compared to 2016. The coking coal imports are expected to be 3.5 million tons, reflecting a flat growth trend from a year ago, says Italian Coal Association in its latest press release.
Italy electricity mix is already complying with the Paris agreements, well in advance of many OCSE countries, as more than 70 per cent of electricity is produced by gas and renewable, having no nuclear and coal at one of the lowest European share at 13 per cent (EU average: 28%), said Andrea Clavarino, President of the Italian Coal Association – Assocarboni during the 2016 Coal Industry Advisory Board plenary meeting in Paris (CIAB, the coal consultative body to the International Energy Agency, AIE).
The press release further noted that, Assocarboni President also requested AIE and its Executive Director FatihBirol, to conduct official studies on CO2 pre-combustion emissions in both coal and gas. Assocarboni is believed, the study will help to correct the media reports saying, the coal is a dirtier fuel when producing electricity and therefore gas should be the only fossil fuel of transition to a clean energy.
The press note further said, the Assocarboni and many other companies and associations have already produced scientific studies on the CO2 emissions from coal and gas life cycle, but no official data have still been released from AIE that have evidenced that gas on a life cycle have similar if not higher CO2 or methane emission than coal, when taking into account the entire cycle, extraction, venting and transmission.
According to Assocarboni, In particular, several international studies (e.g. Robert Howarth, Cornell University; Frank Clemente, Penn University; Nick Cowern, Newcastle University) have widely demonstrated that shale gas and fracking have serious environmental consequences.
Italian Coal Association’s latest press release further said, Academic researchers showed that shale gas generators, especially in its extraction, higher CO2 levels than coal and lawmakers must keep these findings in consideration in the definition of a country’s energy policy.
