BALTIC DRY INDEX SURGES TO 1257 POINTS W/E 18 NOV; BPI ROSE 37.3% W/W
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rally continues this past week and ending on a positive note. The BDI was up 20.29% from the previous week and Cape Index was up 19.50% or around 449 points week over week.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was reported up 20.29% week over week and ended at 1257 points on 18th November 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index was up 19.50% week over week. The BCI closed 2752 points on 18 November 2016. The Panamax index (BPI) was increased (37.3%) to 1388 points on 18 November 2016. The Supramax index (BSI) was rose 14.75% to 809 points on 18 November 2016, compared to 705 points on 11 November 2016.
The handy size index was also increased 8.88% and the index was closed at 466 points for the same period.
According to Vistaar India, this past week’s daily average earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India passing through Singapore, rated at around US$ 8000 per day, up US$ 1000 per day compared to week ending 11 November, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 9000 per day (up US$ 1000 per day week over week) delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be firm this week.
The Vistaar India further noted that average spot Cape’s charter rates were reported at around US$ 19,364 per day and Panamax was reported at around US$ 11,074 per day. The spot Supramax’s average charters rate was reported at around $ 8456 per day, while the Handy-size ships were at $ 6664 per day. The average spot charter rates for all size ships rose week over week.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 11000 per day, the Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,000 per day and Handysize at US$ 6500 per day.
The Supramax S8 route charter rates rose 3.84% week over week to $6159 per day on Friday 18 November 2016 ($5931 was reported on 11 November 2016).
According to Vistaar the freight rate from Indonesia to India is expected to be firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was closed at US$ 46.86 per barrel rose 4.71% week over week. The bunker prices were closed at US$ 272.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex. Singapore on 18 November 2016).
