WEEKLY US COAL OUTPUT UP 0.7% W/W TO 16 MMST: EIA
.jpg) COALspot.com – U.S., the world’s second largest coal producers have produced approximately totalled an estimated 16 million short tons (mmst) of coal in a week (For the week ended August 20, 2016), EIA said in its latest report.
According to EIA’s latest report, this production estimate is 0.7% higher than last week's estimate and 15.3% lower than the production estimate in the comparable week in 2015.
East of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 5.8 mmst (Flat week over week) and west of the Mississippi River produced totalled an estimated 10 mmst (up 0.99% week over week), according to weekly figures released by the US Energy Information Agency (EIA), on August 25, 2016.
U.S. year-to-date (as of August 20, 2016) coal production totalled an estimated 437.6 mmst, 24.9% lower than the comparable year-to-date coal production in 2015. U.S. coal production during first quarter 2016 totaled 173.0 million short tons. This was 16.6% lower than the previous quarter and 28.0% lower than first quarter 2015.
Q1'16 Coal Output
According to EIA's Quarterly Coal Report, the first quarter 2016 U.S. coal exports (14.2 million short tons) decreased 7.5% from fourth quarter 2015 and decreased 35.6% from first quarter 2015.
Coal Exports
Coal exports have declined for twelve quarters in a row. The average price of U.S. coal exports during the first quarter 2016 was $61.41 per short ton.
Coal Imports
EIA further says in its Quarterly Coal Report, continued to import coal primarily from Colombia (81.2%), Canada (8.9%), and Indonesia (7.4%). U.S. coal imports in first quarter 2016 totaled 2.7 million short tons. The average price of U.S. coal imports during the first quarter 2016 was $63.97 per short ton.
