THE BALTIC EXCHANGE, TRACKING RATES FOR SHIPS CARRYING DRY BULK COMMODITIES SLIDE SLIGHTLY
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities slide slightly as Panamax and Supramax segments ending in a negative note this past week. The BDI was down 3.05 percent from last week and Cape Index was up around 2 points.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was down week over week to 636 points on 5 August 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index up 0.26% week over week. The BCI closed 770 points on 5 August 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was slides 7.51% to 640 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was declined 3.58% to 647 points on 5 August 2016, compared to 671 points on 29 July 2016.
According to Press Announcements from the Baltic Exchange Limited, following agreement with the Singapore Exchange (SGX), it will now proceed with the solicitation of support from Baltic Exchange Shareholders for SGX’s offer to acquire the issued ordinary share capital for GBP 160.41 in cash per Baltic Share. This represents a total consideration of GBP 77.6 million. It is contemplated that the Baltic Shareholders will also receive from the Baltic Exchange a minimum of GBP 18.80 in cash per Baltic Share, as a final dividend, conditional upon the acquisition proceeding. This means that the total valuation of the Baltic Exchange is a minimum of GBP 86.7 million.
The Baltic Exchange will now consult its major shareholders to secure their support for SGX’s offer. Subject to receiving sufficient support, and to it receiving the endorsement of the Baltic Exchange Board, it is expected that a scheme of arrangement will then be circulated to shareholders and a General Meeting will be announced, for shareholders to vote on an offer from SGX.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India through Singapore, rated at around US$ 7000 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 5500 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be flat to slightly firm this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 5,446 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 5,122 per day, the Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 6,799 per day, decline slightly compared to last week’s average charter rates. The Handy-size ships were at $ 5,721 per day, the average charter rate was up week over week.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 8,000 per day and Handysize at US$ 6,000 per day. The Cape size, Panamax, Supramax and Handy Size vessel’s average future rates flat compared to last week’s reported rates.
The supramax S8 route charter rates declined slightly (2.05%) week over week to $ 6538 per day on Friday 5 August 2016 ($6675 was reported on 29 July 2016). Freight rate from Indonesia to India is expected to be Flat to slightly firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was up 4.26 percent and closed at US$ 44.27 per barrel. The bunker prices also up and closed at US$ 221.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 5 August 2016).
