INDIA BUYING INTO AUSTRALIA'S COAL - INTERVIEW
India is in line to buy vast amounts of Australian coal. An Indian cabinet minister is on a special mission to Australia to help satisfy India's urgent energy needs, and he's been visiting coal mines in the eastern states of New South Wales and Queensland.
Presenter: Brendan Trembath
Speakers:
Sriprakash Jaiswal, India's Minister of State for Coal;
Arun Kumar Jagatramka, Chairman of Gujarat NRE Australia;
Aditya Jhun Jhunwala; Indian executive
BRENDAN TREMBATH: Coal is such as important commodity in India the nation has a minister for coal. His name is Sriprakash Jaiswal and he's in Australia this week.
SRIPRAKASH JAISWAL: It's my duty to visit all the countries where coal is available and Australia is one of those countries where coal is available and superior quality coal is available.
BRENDAN TREMBATH: India's Minister of State for Coal has been to see mines in the New South Wales Hunter Valley and in the Emerald region of Queensland.
He was underground again last night attending a cocktail party in his honour in the basement of a Sydney hotel.
Sriprakash Jaiswal says India is looking to secure more coal because more than half the nation's electricity comes from coal fired plants.
SRIPRAKASH JAISWAL: So we are in search of some foreign coal.
BRENDAN TREMBATH: India is coming in after the Chinese. Australia has a long standing relationship with the Chinese. Is that a disadvantage for you at all?
SRIPRAKASH JAISWAL: That doesn't make any difference. Our relationship, India and Australia relationship are very strong and very old.
BRENDAN TREMBATH: The cocktail party for the minister was hosted by an Indian mining executive whose company's first investment in Australia was an old mine just outside Wollongong. The renewed mine produces coking coal which is used to heat blast furnaces to make steel.
Arun Kumar Jagatramka says there's strong demand for both coking coal and the coal used to make electricity.
ARUN KUMAR JAGATRAMKA: They're growing at a very fast rate and India does not have enough resources to feed that demand. And from that perspective Australia has all the resources and Indian industries and Indian companies do need to take a long term view, do need to invest in resources and infrastructure and develop the infrastructure in Australia to be able to meet the longer term demand that is coming in India.
BRENDAN TREMBATH: Australia has a long term relationship with China, exporting coal to China, does it come as a disadvantage to come in second in this market?
ARUN KUMAR JAGATRAMKA: I don't think so. It is like China has already lubricated and prepared the venue for us. We only have to land.
