THE BDI FELL ON WEAKER RATES FOR CAPESIZE & PANAMAX VESSELS
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities slide slightly as Cape and Panamax segments ending in negative. The BDI was down 3.62 percent from last week and Cape Index was also down around 12.51 points.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was down week over week to 718 points on 22 July 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index declined 12.51% week over week. The BCI closed 895 points on 22 July 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was also slides 4.17% to 827 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was up 0.72% to 698 points on 22 July 2016, compared to 693 points on 15 July 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India through Singapore, rated at around US$ 9000 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 6500 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be firm this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 6,498 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 6,620 per day, decline slightly compared to last week’s average charter rates. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 7,301 per day and Handy-size ships were at $ 5,594 per day, average charter rates were up week over week.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,500 per day, Panamax at US$ 8,000 per day, Supramax at US$ 8,000 per day and Handysize at US$ 6,000 per day. No change from last week reported charter rates.
The supramax S8 route charter rates moved up 8.06% week over week to $ 6741 per day on Friday 22 July 2016 ($ 6,238 was reported on 15 July 2016). Freight rate from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady/firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was down 3.75 percent and closed at US$ 45.59 per barrel. The bunker prices also down and closed at US$ 236.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 22 July 2016).
