BALTIC DRY INDEX REMAIN FIRM, UP BY 5.97 WEEK OVER WEEK
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities continued to remain firm with all segments ending in positive. The BDI was up 5.97 percent from last week and Cape Index was also up around 21 points.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was up week over week to 745 points on 15 July 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index rose 2.09% week over week. The BCI closed 1023 points on 15 July 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was up 8.96% to 863 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was up 7.11% to 693 points on 15 July 2016, compared to 647 points on 8 July 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India through Singapore, rated at around US$ 8500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 6500 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be firm this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 7,548 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 6,896 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 7,243 per day and Handy size ships were at $ 5,337 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ships were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,500 per day, Panamax at US$ 8,000 per day, Supramax at US$ 8,000 per day and Handysize at US$ 6,000 per day. The charter rates were rose from last week.
The supramax S8 route charter rates moved up 12.01% week over week to $ 6238 per day on Friday 15 July 2016 ($ 5569 was reported on 8 July 2016). Freight rate from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady/firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was up 1.3 percent and closed at US$ 47.37 per barrel. The bunker prices up and closed at US$ 244.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 15 July 2016).
