BDI ROSE ON STRONGER DEMAND ACROSS ALL VESSEL SEGMENTS
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rose this past week. The BDI was up 11.16 percent from last week and Cape Index was also up around 117 points.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities was up week over week to 677 points on 1 July 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index rose 12.81% week over week. The BCI closed 1030 points on 1 July 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was up 18.12% to 691 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was up 7.55% to 627 points on 1 July 2016, compared to 583 points on 24 June 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India through Singapore, rated at around US$ 7500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 6000-6500 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be firm this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 7,353 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 5,528 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 6,555 per day and Handy size ships were at $ 5,092 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,500 per day and Handysize at US$ 6,000 per day. No change from the previous week.
The S8 route for supramax moved up by 1.33% week over week to $ 5,384 per day on Friday 1 July 2016 (S8 as on 24 June 2016 $ 5313 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady/firm this week.
The Brent crude oil price was up 2.95 percent and closed at US$ 49.84 per barrel. The bunker prices up and closed at US$ 250.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 1 July 2016).
