BDI GAINED ON A STRONGER DEMAND FOR CAPESIZE SHIPS
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rose this past week on a stronger demand for Capesize vessels. The freight market was steady this past Week and all sector’s indices were rose except Panamax & Supramax sectors.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities up 0.66% week over week to 610 points on 3 June 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index also rose 10% week over week or up 83 points. The BCI closed 913 points on 3 June 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was down 5.55% to 550 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was declined 0.86% to 574 points on 3 June 2016, compared to 579 points on 27 May 2016.
The handy size index was up 0.58% to 349 points on 3 June 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India through Singapore, rated at around $ 6,000 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 5,000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range. No change from the previous week.
The freight rates are expected to be flat to soft this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 6754 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 4393 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 5998 per day and Handysize ships were at $ 4975 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,500 per day and Handysize at US$ 6,000 per day. No change from the previous week.
The S8 route for supramax continued to move up or increased by 0.20% week over week to $ 4866 per day on Friday 3 June 2016 (S8 as on 27 May 2016 $ 4856 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be flat to weak this week.
The Brent crude oil prices up 1.45% week over week and closed at US$ 50.04 per barrel. The bunker prices closed at US$ 230 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 3 June 2016).
