INDIA'S COAL IMPORTS IN APRIL 2016 DECLINED 15% Y/Y; COAL INDIA INCREASED COAL PRICES BY 6.2%
 Coal India has approved raising weighted average coal prices by 6.2 per cent over the current price for both regulated and non-regulated sectors.
Due to this revision, CIL will earn additional revenue of around US$ 480,951,515 for the balance period of financial year 2016-17.
The reports further noted that, CIL has also approved the differential price for Non-Regulated Sector at a reduced rate of 20 per cent against 35 per cent earlier over the price of regulated sector for G6 to G17 grades of coal for all subsidiaries of CIL.
In increase in coal prices by India’s biggest producer will boost generation costs and could further reduce demand from cash-strapped regional power retailers already curtailing purchases because they can’t afford the cost of electricity, says Bloomberg.
According to Bloomberg, coal accounts for more than 60 percent of India’s power generation capacity and more than 75 percent of the nation’s electricity production. Bloomberg further said that, according to power producer NTPC Ltd., the price increase is expected to boost generation tariffs by as much as US$ 0.0022 a kilowatt hour, or about 5 percent.
India has witnessed a steady decrease of coal imports in recent times. According IEEFA, India’s coal imports in April 2016 declined 15% year on year (yoy). The calendar year to-April 2016 saw a record 18.7% yoy decline in imports to 64.3 million tonnes (Mt). In value terms, Indian coal imports declined 32% yoy from US$1,355m to US$913m in April 2016. This is a significant saving that is reducing India’s current account deficit and stabilizing the currency.
IEEFA forecasts a 30% decline in global traded thermal coal demand by 2021 relative to 2015 levels. Declining demand in each of the three largest import markets – China, Japan and now also India – overrides growth in the rest of Asia.
