THE PANAMAX INDEX WAS UP 17 POINTS W/W
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities rose this week.
The freight market was firm and all segments except Handy-max were up ending on a positive note.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities up 4.16 % week over week to 625 points on 20 May 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index also increased 9% week over week or up 72 points. The BCI closed 870 points on 20 May 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was up 2.85% to 614 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was up 1% to 562 points on 20 May 2016, compared to 553 points on 13 May 2016.
The handy size index was declined 1.15% to 343 points on 20 May 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India (passing Singapore) rated at around $ 6,000 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 5,000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be steady this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 6,981 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 4,909 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 5,879 per day and Handy-size ships were at $ 4,878 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,500 per day and Handy-size at US$ 6,000 per day.
The S8 route for supramax slightly up by 2.88% week over week to $ 4,675 per day on Friday 20 May 2016 (S8 as on 13 May 2016 $ 4544 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady this week.
The Brent crude oil prices up 1.51% week over week and closed at US$ 48.81per barrel. The bunker prices closed at US$ 229.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 20 May 2016).
