BALTIC DRY INDEX ENDS WEEK ON A NEGATIVE NOTE
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities decline this week.
The freight market was weak and all segments were down ending on a negative note.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities down 10.24% week over week to 631 points on 6 May 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index also declined 20.14% week over week or down 225 points. The BCI closed 892 points on 6 May 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was also lost 11.39% to 591 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was down 0.68% to 578 points on 6 May 2016, compared to 582 points on 29 April 2016.
The handy size index was also declined 2.18% to 359 points on 6 May 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India (passing Singapore) rated at around $ 5500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $ 5000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be flat to soft this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 7,024 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 4,723 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 6,064per day and Handy-size ships were at $ 5,088 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape-size ships were at US$ 10,000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7,500 per day, Supramax at US$ 7,500 per day and Handy-size at US$ 6,000 per day.
The S8 route for supramax slightly Down by 1.70% week over week to $4464 per day on Friday 6 May 2016 (S8 as on 29 April 2016 $ 4436 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady this week.
The Brent crude oil prices up 5.73 % week over week and closed at US$ 45.37 per barrel. The bunker prices closed at US$ 211.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 6 May 2016).
