THE SUPRAMAX INDEX WAS UP TWENTY-FOUR POINTS TO 473 POINTS
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities continued to rose this week.
The freight market was steady and all segments were slightly up ending in positive note.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities up 2.78% week over week to 406 points on 24 March 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index also rose 3.04% week over week or up 6 points. The BCI closed 203 points on 24 March 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was up 0.65% to 466 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was rose 5.35% to 473 points, compared to 449 points on 18 March 2016.
The handy size index was also up 3.08% to 268 points on 24 March 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India (passing Singapore) rated at around $5000 – 5500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $4500 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be steady to firm this week.
The spot Cape’s average charter rates were reported at around US$ 2,082 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 3,731 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 4,944 per day and Handy size ships were at $ 3,972per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape size ships were at US$ 8000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7000 per day, Supramax at US$ 6000 per day and Handy size at US$ 5000 per day.
The S8 route for supramax firmed up and was up by 9.70% week over week to $3,607 per day on Friday 24 March 2016 (S8 as on 18 March 2016 $ 3,288 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady to firm this week.
The Brent crude oil prices was up 1.84% week over week and closed at US$ 40.44 per barrel. The bunker prices steady this past week and closed at US$ 179.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 24 March 2016).
