THE BALTIC DRY INDEX ROSE SLIGHTLY WEEK OVER WEEK; BCI UP 11.93%
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities continued rose this week helped by higher rates for Cape and smaller vessels.
The freight market was steady and all segments except Panamax were up ending in positive note.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities up 1.80% week over week to 395 points on 18 March 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index also rose 11.93% week over week or up 21 points. The BCI closed 197 points on 18 March 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was down 2.93% to 463 points from last week while the Supramax index (BSI) was rose 6.9% to 449 points, compared to 420 points on 11 march 2016.
The handy size index was also up 4.42% to 260 points on 18 March 2016 from 11 March 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India (passing Singapore) rated at around $5000-5500 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $4500-5000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be steady to firm this week.
The Cape average charter rates were reported at around US$ 2,036 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 3,716 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 4,699 per day and Handy size ships were at $ 3865 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape size ships were at US$ 8000 per day, Panamax at US$ 7000 per day, Supramax at US$ 7000 per day and Handy size at US$ 6000 per day.
The S8 route for supramax firmed up and was up by 8.59% week over week to $3288 per day on Friday 18 March 2016 (S8 as on 11 March 2016 $3028 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady to firm next week.
The Brent crude oil prices was up 2% week over week and closed at US$41.20 per barrel. The bunker prices flat or slightly done this past week and closed at US$ 181 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 18 March 2016).
