THE BALTIC EXCHANGE CONTINUED TO ROSE THIS PAST WEEK
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities continued to rise this week helped by higher rates for panamaxes and smaller vessels.
The freight market was steady and all segments were up ending in positive note.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities up 11.17% week over week to 388 points on 11 March 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index also rose 7.32% week over week or up 12 points. The BCI closed 176 points on 11 March 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was up 23.57% to 477 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was rose 13.21% to 420 points, compared to 371 points on 4 march 2016.
The handy size index was also up 7.33% to 249 points on 11 March 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India (passing Singapore) rated at around $5000 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $5000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be firm this week.
The Cape average charter rates were reported at around US$ 2,172 per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$ 3,827 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $ 4,391 per day and Handy size ships were at $ 3,690 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape size ships were at US$ 8000 per day, Panamax at US$ 6000 per day, Supramax at US$ 6000 per day and Handy size at US$ 5000 per day.
The S8 route for supramax firmed up and was up by 12.19% week over week to $3,028 per day on Friday 11 March 2016 (S8 as on 4 March 2016 $ 2,699 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady to firm next week.
The S8 route charter rates for Supramax up 4.16 percent week over week to $2679 per day on Friday 4 March 2016 compare to on US$ 2572 per day on 26th Feb 2016. Indonesia to India freight rates are expected to be firm to steady this week.
The Brent crude oil prices was up 4.31% week over week and closed at US$ 40.39 per barrel. The bunker prices firmed this past week and closed at US$ 185.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 11 March 2016).
