FREIGHT MARKET MOVING POSITIVE; ALL SEGMENTS EXCEPT CAPE SHOWING A FIRM TREND
 COALspot.com: The freight market was steady this past week and showing a firm trend for all segments except for Cape index.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) of dry-bulk shipping freights, a measure of global supply and demand for shipping of commodities up 6.73% week over week to 349 points on 4 March 2016. The index peaked at 11,793 in May 2008.
The Cape Index was declined week over week or down 13 points. The BCI closed 164 points on 4 March 2016.
The Panamax index (BPI) was up 9.66% to 9.66 points while the Supramax index (BSI) was rose 11.41% to 371 points, compared to 333 points on 26 February 2016.
The handy size index was also up 9.4 % to 232 points on 4 March 2016.
Average daily earnings for Supramax, for the route Indonesia to India (passing Singapore) rated at around $4500-5000 per day this past week, while the Panamax vessels rated at around $4500-5000 per day delivery South China / Hong Kong range.
The freight rates are expected to be firm this week.
The Cape average charter rates were reported at around US$2,221per day and Panamax’s was reported at around US$3,098 per day. The Supramax’s average charters rates were at around $3,875 per day and Handy size ships were at $3,446 per day.
The futures for three years (2016-2018) for the ships were reported higher than the current spot rates the ship were earning. The Cape size ships were at US$ 8000 per day, Panamax at US$ 6000 per day, Supramax at US$ 6000 per day and Handy size at US$ 5000 per day.
The S8 route for supramax firmed up and was up by 26.16% week over week to $2,247 per day on Friday 4 March 2016 (S8 as on 26th Feb 2016 $ 2572 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be steady to firm next week.
The S8 route charter rates for Supramax up 4.16 percent week over week to $2679 per day on Friday 4 March 2016 compare to on US$ 2572 per day on 26th Feb 2016. Indonesia to India freight rates are expected to be firm to steady this week.
The Brent crude oil prices was up 10.31% week over week and closed at US$ 38.72 per barrel. The bunker prices firmed this past week and closed at US$ 159.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 4 March 2016).
