SOUTH AFRICA IS HOPING TO SHIP MORE COAL TO INDIA IN 2016
 COALspot.com: South Africa is hoping to boost coal exports to India after shipping a record 75.4 million tonnes of coal in 2015, industry officials said, said Reuters.
"As far as South African coal for India, it is definitely on a growth path. How long and how much is yet to be seen," Arun Maheshwari, senior vice president commercial for Indian firm JSW Steel, told a coal conference in Cape Town, as quoted by Reuters.
The Reuters further reported that, Global oversupply and a drop in coal prices to 7-year lows have hit miners and coal exporting countries hard. Indonesian coal exports fell 50 million tonnes in 2015 due to the market glut and Chinese slowdown. A drop in Indonesian exports to India, which imported around 165 million tonnes of thermal coal in 2015, offers an opportunity for South Africa, analysts said.
South African coal, which is generally of a high calorific value, can now compete better on price with Indonesian coal, in part due to lower freight prices. However, Indian power utilities still prefer for Indonesia’s medium to low calorific value coal to due to lower ash and sulphur content.
Meantime, South India’s cement producers have already switched their procurement to pet coke of U.S origin from high quality thermal coal. The current extremely low sea freights are supporting long-haul cargos at very competitive landed cost for end-users.
One of the Indonesia’s leading low Ash and low Sulphur coal producer and exporter, Adaro Indonesia has shipped 16% of its coal to China & 13% to India in 2015. The miner has produced 51.46 Mt in 2015, 8% lower compared to FY14 output.
The world oil prices are also under pressure due to high output. EIA’s forecast for the average Brent crude oil prices to average $38/b in 2016 and $50/b in 2017. Forecast West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices are expected to average the same as Brent in both years.
