COAL REMAINS THE NO.1 FUEL FOR POWER GENERATION - EXXONMOBIL
COALspot.com: Energy demand trends from 2010 to 2040 are expected to vary significantly around the world, as countries move along very different trajectories in terms of key demand drivers including population, demographics, economic growth and income levels, ExxonMobil said in its the Outlook for Energy: A View to 2040.
China and India together are expected to account for half the growth in global energy demand because these two developing economies will lead the world in terms of population size and the pace of growth in standards of living, Exxon said.
According to ExxonMobil's 2016 outlook for energy, Coal is expected to remain an important source of electricity generation, but its share of delivered electricity is expected to drop from 40 percent to about 25 percent over the outlook period as most nations turn to cleaner, less-carbon-intense fuels to improve air quality and curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The outlook further noted that, the biggest gains are likely to come from natural gas and nuclear power, as well as renewable generation like wind and solar.
Today, coal accounts for almost 40 percent of the fuel used for power generation in the OECD32, but we expect it to drop to 15 percent by 2040. Coal’s share of China’s power generation fuel mix is expected to decrease from about 85 percent in 2010 to less than 50 percent in 2040, while nuclear, natural gas and renewables are all expected to grow in share, Exxon said.
Exxon also noted tha In India, however, coal is expected to continue to be the main fuel for power generation, nearly tripling over The Outlook period. Nuclear power in India also is expected to see significant growth, rising about nine times by 2040.
Exxon is predicting that, the demand for coal expected to be about the same in 2040 as in 2010, coal’s share of the global energy market is seen shrinking from about 25 percent in 2010 to less than 20 percent in 2040 as China follows OECD nations in shifting toward cleaner-burning fuels.
The global power generation's demand for coal will peak by 2025 to 108 quadrillion BTUs and decline to 95 quadrillion BTUs by 2040. But, Coal remains the No.1 fuel for power generation, Exxon said in its Outlook for Energy: A View to 2040.
ExxonMobil has also predicted that global demand for coal will peak by 2025 (164 quadrillion BTUs) then decline to 138 quadrillion BTUs by 2040.
