BALTIC DRY INDEX SINKS 10% WEEK OVER WEEK TO AN ALL-TIME LOW OF 429 POINTS
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, decline around 10% week over week on Friday.
The index hit an all-time low of 429 points on January 08 2016, the lowest in records that date back to January 1985. Baltic Dry hit a temporary peak on May 20, 2008, when the index hit 11,793.
The downturn in dry bulk shipping has worsened significantly in recent months as demand for iron ore and coal has declined in the face of slower economic growth in China.
The Capesize index was down 34.54% at 343 points on Friday. The Panamax index was closed this week almost at same levels compared to last week’s closing or up 1.88% at 434 points. The Supramax index was also declined 4.23% to 430 points while the handy size index was closed at 256 points after losing 6.23% week over week.
The Supramax charter rates from Indonesia to India were rating at around $4000-5000 per day delivery Singapore. The Panamax vessels were rating at around $ 3000 per day for the same route.
Freight rates are expected to be soft next week as the demand is weak.
The average daily earnings for Cape size vessels which typically transport 150k tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal dropping to $ 2730 per day while Panamax size vessels which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes closed at $ 3466 per day.
The Supramax size vessel’s average daily earnings reported at $ 4494 per day this week and Handysize closed at $ 3761 per day.
The Indonesia to India Freight rates are expected to be soft next week.
The Brent crude oil prices was declined 9.03% closed at $33.55 per barrel this Friday, 8 January 2016 compared to $ 36.88 per barrel on 18 December 2015. The bunker prices were also soft and closed at $170.50 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 8th Jan 2016).
