THE PORT OF NEWCASTLE SHIPPED 13.31% MORE COAL IN MAY 2015 COMPARED TO APRIL 2015
 COALspot.com: The Port of Newcastle, Australia’s major trading ports and the world’s largest coal export port, has shipped $1.18 billion worth of 13.311 million tons of coal for the month ended 31 May 2015. The port has shipped 13.31% more coal in May 2015 compared to April 2015. The based on available information, the average selling price was around $ 89.33 per mt in May compared to $90 per mt in April 2015. The May’15 average price of coal was $0.67 per mt or 0.74% lesser from April average selling price.
According to port’s monthly report, YTD (2015 calendar year to date), the port has shipped $5.67 billion worth of 63.16 million tons of coal. The average selling price of YTD (January - May) was around $ 89.91 per MT.
Port has shipped 13.31% more coal in May compared to its April exports.
$1,189.2 million trade value of coal shipped in May 2015.
According to operation report posted on port’s website, as of 31 May 2015, the port has served 140 (up 28.44%) ocean going vessels in May and 677 vessels January – May this year.
The port’s report further said that, the Port of Newcastle shipped coal to China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Caledonia, Taiwan & Australia in May 2015.
Anglo, Peabody, Rio Tinto and Xstrata are some of the larger coal exporters to ship coal from Newcastle port.
2014 coal exports
According to 2014 Annual Trade Report of Port of Newcastle, the port has also shipped $13.78 billion worth of 159.03 million tons of coal in 2014. The port has served total 1,717 ocean going coal vessel during 2014. The annual trade report also claimed that, in 2014, a new coal export record of 159 million tonnes was achieved, the port of Newcastle.

The Port of Newcastle is the largest bulk shipping port on the east coast of Australia and the world’s leading coal export port. On 30 May 2014, Port of Newcastle Investments (trading as Port of Newcastle) commenced a 98-year lease of the Port of Newcastle with the New South Wales Government.
According to company’s website, port’s world-class infrastructure supports the import and export of more than 40 commodities through the port. In 2012-13, the port handled 148.8 million tonnes in trade throughput, with a value of approximately $19 billion.
