GUACOLDA STARTS THIRD COAL-FIRED UNIT
 Macorship reported that, Chile’s Empresa Electrica Guacolda said that the third unit at its Guacolda coal-fired power plant began supplying power to the grid from midday on July 31.
Guacolda, owned by AES Gener (50%), Empresas COPEC (25%) and Ultramar (25%) said the unit supplied electricity at its maximum capacity of 152 MW to Chile’s Central Interconnected System which provides power to around 93% of the population.
It is the first of two 152-MW units the company is building at the generation plant, located near the port of Huasco, 700 km north of Santiago which will double installed capacity at the site to 608 MW from early 2010, at an estimated cost of $700 million.
The company said around $100 million of this will be spent on cleaning up emissions from the new and existing generation units.
Guacolda noted that the new unit represents the first project to be realized on SIC after the approval of Chile’s Second Short Law in 2005 which sought increase incentives for investment in generation following the loss of natural gas supplies from neighboring Argentina.
It is also the first of a huge wave of new coal-fired capacity on both the central and northern grids that will supply much of Chile’s additional electricity needs over the next decade.
Guacolda shareholders COPEC and Ultramar are planning to develop sub-bituminous coal deposits in the far-south of the country to meet part of this huge increase in demand for coal, almost all of which would have to be imported.
