FREIGHT DERIVATIVE VOLUMES REACHED TOTALED 14,154 CONTRACTS IN APRIL - SGX
COALspot.com: “Our unique suite of freight and bulk commodity products provides market participants with a wide range of trading strategies and risk management solutions”, SGX says in its April 2015 monthly freight report.
According to SGX, its freight derivative volumes reached totaled 14,154 contracts in April (up 700% y/y), while open interest averaged reached a record 32,218 contracts during the month, almost doubling since the start of the year.
“ The Baltic Dry Index fell 2% in April with mixed performance by underlying vessel class. Capesize and Panamax rates rose 19% and 10% respectively supported by a seasonal improvement in demand, while Supramax and Handysize rates fell 13% and 4%, respectively. Freight rate volatility reached an almost two-year low,” SGX report says.
SGX’s monthly freight report further noted that, while seasonality has provided some support for larger vessels, rates in general remain muted as rising demand and growing vessel demolitions have yet to offset vessel oversupply. Looking forward, numerous unknowns plague the Cape size market. With uncertainty over where supply cuts will come next, the playing field remains wide open on who stays and who goes in the iron ore market, which in turn may have significant implications for freight rates.
Freight rates were uncharacteristically stable during the month, with volatility at its lowest level in almost two years, says SGX.
SGX’s monthly freight report further noted, the April forward curves closed pricing in a relatively robust recovery for Cape size rates over the coming months, while expectations for other vessel classes remain more muted.
While a seasonal improvement in demand provided some support for larger vessels, freight rates in general remain near multi-decade lows, says SGX.
Commenting on Iron ore SGX says, across key dry bulk commodities, iron ore stockpiles closed the month at 97Mt (3% lower than the end of March), and prices rose 10% amidst higher Chinese steel output, mill restocking and improvement sentiment in the Chinese property market.
In thermal coal, inventory at Chinese ports reduced slightly in April closing the month at below 31Mt. Absolute stock levels remain high, and with domestic prices continuing to decline there have been few signs supporting a near-term resurgence in imports, says SGX on Thermal coal.
