DRY BULK RATES CONTINUED TO RISE THIS WEEK
 COALspot.com: The freight market was steady this week as all the segments increased after many weeks of weak trend.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI), the weighted average of the freight rates for the four different sizes of dry-bulk vessels, has increased 5.16% week on week and closed at 591 points while the cape index was up 8.40% for the same period and closed at 423 points.
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is a value issued in USD daily by the London-based Baltic Exchange as an assessment of the price of moving the major raw materials by sea. 23 shipping routes were measured on a time charter basis, the index covers four different sizes of dry-bulk vessels such as Handysize, Supramax, Panamax, and Capesize carrying a range of commodities including coal, iron ore and grain.
The Panamax and Supramax indices were increased by about 5% closing at 617 points and 635 points respectively. While, the handy size was up 4.35 pct closing at 384 points.
In the Far East/SE Asia the freight rates were steady/firm with supramax charter rates delivery Singapore was reported at around US$ 7000-7500 per day for a trip via Indonesia to India.
The Panamax charter rates were also steady and ships delivery Indonesia was reportedly fixed delivery China around US$ 6000 per day for a trip to India. Freight rates are expected to be steady for supramax vessels and panamax vessels in coming days.
The average charter rate for cape size vessel was at US$ 3026 per day, US$ 4941 per day for Panamax, US$ 6638 per day for Supramax and US$ 5,667 per day for handy size vessels.
The futures for three years (2015-2017) were reported at around US$ 14,000 per day for cape size vessels, US$ 9,000 per day for panama size vessels, US$ 9,000 per day for Supramax size vessel and US$ 8,000 per day for Handy size vessels.
The S8 route for supramax continued with firm trend this week and was up 6.79% closing at US$ 6494 per day week over week (last week US$ 6081 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be firm next week.
The Brent crude oil prices were slightly firm or up 1.19 pct closing at US$ 55.32 per barrel (last week US$ 54.67 per barrel). The bunker prices were soft and closed at 307.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 20th March 2015).
