BALTIC DRY INDEX CONTINUALLY DIPPED IN RED
COALspot.com: The Baltic Dry Index continues its decline and fell 5.18 pct to 530 points week on week due to falling commodity prices and declining import demand from China and particularly celebrations of Lunar New Year holidays next week. Most of the owners are hoping that the market would pick up after the Lunar New Year holidays and will have to wait to see how the market behaves.
In recent months, the dry bulk shipping industry is affected by numerous factors such as world economies’ slow growth and weak commodity demand. China’s economic growth rate impact dry bulk shipper’s movement as China is an important commodity market, which is the backbone of growth of shipping industry recent years. According to industry analysts, the world’s fleet of dry-bulk ships are far exceeding demand and estimated around 20% above demand over the past few years. Recovery of shipping industry has to go through rough sea in coming years to reach a safe destination.
The cape index is down nearly 8.56 percent over the past one week and closed at 630 points on 13 Friday 2015. The Panamax index was the only segment where the index was up 16.04 pct week over week and closed 499 points. The Supramax and Handy size index was also down and closed at 436 points (down by 17.73 pct) and 268 points (down by 10.96 pct) respectively on 13 Friday.
In the Far East/SE Asia the freight rates continued its decline this week and the Supramax charter rate delivery arrival load ports in Kalimantan were being rated at around $ 6,500 per day. In the meantime, Panamax charter rates were soft and ships were reported fixed delivery Indonesia around $ 4,000 per day for a trip to India below its break-even point. Freight rates are still expected to be weak on Supramax and Panamax in coming days.
The Cape average charter rates were reported at around $ 5,117 per day, far below its break-even point, Panamax is at around $ 3,984 per day , Supramax at $ 5,077 per day and Handy size/$ 4,021 per day.
The futures for three years (2015-2017) was reported at around $ 14,000 per day for Cape, $ 9,000 per day for Panamax, $ 9,000 per day for Supramax and Handy size at $ 7,500 per day.
The route S8 route for Supramax was declines 10.20% closing at $ 4,625 per day (last week $ 5094 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected remain weak next week.
The Brent crude oil prices was up by 7.43 pct closing at $ 61.52 per barrel (last week $ 57.80 per barrel). The bunker prices was almost at same levels closing at 366.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 13th Feb 2015).
