COASTAL ENERGEN (C&O) COMMENCES 1ST UNIT OF 1200 MW POWER PLANT IN INDIA
 COALspot.com: Coastal Energen, part of the Coal & Oil Group, announced last week the commissioning and commencement of power production at the first unit of 600 mw of 2 x 600 mw Mutiara Thermal Power Plant in Tuticorin. Coastal Energen is Tamil Nadu’s largest private power sector investment with a capital outlay of over Rs 7,600 crore (approximately US$ 1,202,320,000).
In December 2009, the foundation stone was laid for Mutiara thermal power project in Tuticorin district and now, the project has started power supply to TANGEDCO - a power generation and distribution arm of Tamil Nadu government - at Rs 4.91 (approximately US$ 0.08) per MW from this project, under a 15 year power purchase agreement.
According to company’s press conference, till now, it has invested Rs 6,200 crore (approximately US$ 980,840,000) for the project.

Coastal Energen will be importing coal for this unit from Indonesia. The company is planning to expand the power generation to 5,000 MW in the next 10 years and It is also in talks with sovereign, wealth and PE funds to fund the future expansion, the company said during press conference last week.
“It gives me great pleasure to see that our efforts will now start benefiting the people of our state. Power is a critical component for realising Tamil Nadu’s Vision 2023 plan for emerging among the foremost states of India. We are glad that we can play a role in this vision by supplying power to the people of Tamil Nadu for supporting their growth potential,” Ahmed Buhari, founder, president & CEO, Coastal Energen told reporters here, as quoted by My Digital.
“Our second unit of 600 mw is expected to be commissioned in the coming few months and will improve power availability in the state. We are also actively engaged in contributing to the development of the Madurai – Tuticorin industrial corridor, which will also enable this region to progress in line with India’s ambitious growth plans,” Buhari added.
According to media reports, the project is coming at a time when the power crisis is expected to increase in southern parts of the country, led by Tamil Nadu. The deficit is around 9,254 Mw or -22 per cent in the southern region.
