OVERSUPPLY OF TONNAGE PUSHED PANAMAX SEGMENT DOWN FOR ANOTHER WEEK
 COALspot.com: The Dry Bulk market managed to reverse its course from the week prior and with the sole exception of the Panamax segment, we witnessed freight rate increases across the board, Intermodal said in its latest weekly report.
Intermodal further said, things quietened down a bit on Friday, mainly driven by the Capesize market, which lost some steam, while sentiment remains reservedly optimistic across the market, as the smaller size segments market appear to be gaining strength. At the same time, news that the central bank of China proceeded in cutting lending rates, were more than welcome by the markets, as the world’s second largest economy seems more determined to address its slowing economic growth., which is only good news for the Dry Bulk market.
According to broker, rates for Capes closed off the week on the green, on the back of increased enquiry in the Pacific, while the period market remained unchanged with enquiry thin in volume. Things slowed down on Friday, while as this week kicked off it seems that enquiry is still under pressure, with the W. Australia/Qingdao slowing down and things in Brazil remaining overall quiet.
Commenting on Panamax, the Intermodal said, the Panamax market was down for another week, while despite fresh business coming through in key trading areas, oversupply of tonnage is still the main issue, especially in regions like the USG. At the same time, numbers in the period market continued to soften with owners accepting further discounts amidst no clear direction of the market at the moment.
Rates for both Supras and Handies finally managed to close off positively, with the former finding support in both USG and ECSA, which eventually started supporting rates in both regions, while revived coal enquiry for Supra tonnage in the Pacific is currently supporting Supra rates, Intermodal noted.
