MODERN DRY BULK SHIPS' PRICES START FIRMING UP - NIKOS ROUSSANOGLOU, HELLENIC SHIPPING NEWS
While the main story of the past few weeks has been the rebound of the dry bulk market, which has been a result of increased Chinese iron ore imports, another interesting byproduct of this development has been unfolding in the background. Most ship owners are always on the lookout for ship acquisitions and that search is always intensified during period of increases in charter rates, as is the case today. As a result, many are willing to “pull the trigger” on deals otherwise unattainable, due to the increased optimism surrounding the market.
According to the latest weekly report from shipbroker Allied Ship broking, it seems that this is the case in recent days. According to the report, “Caper charter rates have continued their increased route, but at slower pace than that of the previous week, while sluggish Panamax rates still remain under pressure. On the Dry S&P market, which is dominated by Panamax/Kamsarmax sales, there is not much in quantity to report, but useful enough to draw interesting conclusions. Prices on the modern Pmaxes/Kmaxes seem to have ceased their downward trend since “MEDI SENTOSA” (83k, 2008, Jap) has been reported sold to Greek buyer in the region of USD 19.8 Mill. Despite the fact that this deal indicates a stability in asset values, it’s quite interesting to observe the price reduction since the 2nd quarter of the year, when the ex’ “SEA OF HARVEST” (81k, 2009, Jap) had been sold for USD 28 Mill. On the older units, it has been reported that the “CASTILLO DE VIGO” (73k, 1994, S. Korea) has been reported sold at USD 6.25 Mill with surveys freshly passed, indicating a premium of approximately 25% above the current scrap value. On the other hand, the small handy “BIRCH 1” (24k, 1995, Jap) has been reported sold for USD 5.4 Mill, confirming that the asset values of the Handy size vessels are holding their ground”, Allied noted.
The shipbroker added that the “tanker second hand market moved on the same pace and was relatively quiet during last week in terms of sales, with several sources reporting the “OVERSEAS SOVEREIGN” (309k, 1996, Jap) sold to Thai buyers for conversion into FPSO. Interest for crude vessels still exists and strengthens along with the drop of the Brent crude oil, which is now below USD 85 per barrel. It seems that the Chinese Government has taken advantage of this price reduction, increasing crude oil imports during October by 18% compared to the same month last year”.
In a separate report, this time on the new building market, Clarkson Hellas noted that it was “understood to have been declared in October, it has come to light this week that clients of Golden Union Shipping have added two further vessels in their series of 180k Capes at Hanjin Heavy. Delivery of the latest two is in the final quarter of 2016, and takes the total series to five vessels. A similarly quiet week for new orders in the conventional tanker sectors, although at Besiktas in Turkey we have seen a yet unknown Canadian owner contracting two firm 15,000DWT Asphalt & Bitumen tankers, with delivery planned for 2016. This niche sector has seen orders for eight vessels this year, split between the smaller 3-5k sizes (5 vessels), one similar size 15k vessel at 3.Maj in Croatia for Wisby, and one 37k vessel at Hyundai Mipo again for Wisby”, said the shipbroker.
It added that “a little more activity to report in the gas market. Starting with the larger sizes, DSME announced an order for two firm 174,000cbm LNG carriers from Green Shipping with delivery due in the second half of 2017. At HHI, Hoegh LNG announced the addition of a fifth 170,000cbm LNG/Regas unit with delivery in the first quarter of 2017. Evergas also declared options for two further 27,500cbm multigas (LNG/Ethyl/LPG) carriers at Sinopacific Offshore. This takes the total series to eight vessels with delivery of the new additions in 2016. The Port of Tallinn announced an order for four 7,500gt double ended ferries, each with capacity for 150 cars and 600 passengers. The order will be split between Sefine Shipyard in Turkey and Remontowa in Poland. Delivery of all four vessels is planned for 2016″, Clarkson Hellas concluded.
