FREIGHT RATES RALLY AS DEMAND INCREASED
 COALspot.com: The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is a number (in US$) issued daily by the London-based Baltic Exchange up 2.25 percent week on week. BDI closed at 1,181 points on 12 September.
The cape index was also up 2.53 pct for the same period and closed at 2,546 points. In the meantime, Panamax index was slightly softened or lost 6.01 percent week over week and closed at 875 points.
The supramax and handy size indices were almost at same levels or up just 1 percent. Supramax closed at 1006 points and Handy size closed at 477 points week over week.
In the Feast/SE Asia, the coal shipments were steady and the freight rates were up for Supramax and Panamax loading and expected to be continued the trend. Larger Supramax vessels were rating around US$ 12,500-13,000 per day passing Singapore.
Freight rates are expected to be firm for next few weeks.
The average charter rate for cape was at US$ 17,470 per day, Panamax was at US$ 7,013 per day, Supramax was at US$ 10,519 per day and Handy size was at US$ 7,046 per day.
The futures for three years (2015-2017) were at around US$ 20,000 per day for Cape, US$ 11,000 per day for Panamax, US$ 11,500 per day for Supramax and US$ 9,500 per day for Handy size.
The route S8 route for supramax continued to firm, up 6.43 pct week on week and closed at US$ 8561 per day (last week US$ 8044 per day). Freight rates from Indonesia to India is expected to be firm next week.
The Brent crude oil prices slightly softened down by 3.68 pct closing at US$ 97.11 per barrel (last week US$ 100.82 per barrel). The bunker prices also softened closing at US$ 580.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 12th Sept 2014).
