INDIAN GOVERNMENT SHOULD TAKE NOTICE: THERMAL COAL IMPORT PRICES EXTREMELY LOW - COMMODORE RESEARCH
COALspot.com: Both Indonesian and Australian thermal coal prices are at the lowest levels seen this decade, with Indonesia's monthly benchmark thermal coal price last marked at approximately $70/ton and Australian thermal coal currently selling for approximately $69.50/ton, said Commodore Research & Consultancy in its latest analysis report. These are the lowest levels seen this decade. In addition, the average daily price to charter a panamax vessel now stands at $6,941/day, which is only slightly higher than operating costs.
According to Jeffrey Landsberg, Managing Director of Commodore Research, Indian power plant coal stockpiles have now fallen below 9 million tons, which is a critically low level that is the lowest amount seen in twenty-three months and India is in dire and immediate need of more thermal coal. Commodore Research further noted that, at the same time, Indian electricity demand continues to surge and growth in hydropower production remains much lower than seen in previous years, as India has experienced a much weaker than normal monsoon season this year.
Commodore Research is in view that, there is one favorable element on the side of the Indian government however. Thermal coal import prices are at the lowest level seen this decade and panamax shipping costs are also still low. The time for India to take advantage of low thermal coal import prices (and currently low panamax shipping rates) is now. While India's government has had to contend with critically low power plant coal stockpiles, the nation is very fortunate that both thermal coal import prices and panamax shipping rates are low.
India's citizens should not be left without power. Fortunately for the nation, India's domestic coal supply shortage is coinciding with an environment that is extremely advantageous for thermal coal imports.
