THE BIG BULKERS HAVE IN FACT WITNESSED SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN BOTH BASINS
The BDI continues to gain back some of the lost ground, although in reality there isn't a lot to celebrate about, as the increase of the BDI this week was mostly the result of Capes strengthening. It is definitely too early to make any predictions in relation to the developments in Ukraine but we already witnessed sentiment being affected as uncertainty is sometimes almost as bad as negative news themselves. The Russian President said today that his country isn't considering adding Crimea to Russia, which calmed markets a bit, so we are hoping that the situation wont escalate further.
The Capesize segment was the strongest link this past week, with the BCI climbing to over 2,000 points.
The big bulkers have in fact witnessed significant improvements in both basins, with rates in Pacific enjoying the strong presence of mining majors. The Atlantic Panamax business struggled close to the end of the week, as post Lunar Year ballasters from the Pacific have now arrived and little new business was seen for tonnage open on the Continent or in the Med. There were talks of some fresh inquiry from East Coast South America, with rates trending sideways on shorter tonnage list s and fewer ballasters in transit. The Pacific basin was under pressure, with rates easing for trips via Indonesia and Nopac rounds.
The performance of rates for the smaller size segments has remained overall steady in both basins, with Supra tonnage feeling some pressure from gathering ballasters in the U SG region, which nevertheless is expected to ease this current week.
